How To Get Out Of A Creative Rut

01:16

Just as a stream may run dry and as juice gets sucked out of the orange leaving it fairly useless (we have other sources of fibre, eh?) so also can one's creative juices dry up,leaving one unmotivated and if you're like me, slightly depressed.

So therefore, I'm here today, to tell you how to actually defeat this pause in your creativity, having gone through phases myself.

1. Think outside the box

As seen in: 4 tips on creating edgy outfits

You might be thinking "blah blah blah. Heard this one before." Alas, it's the first and most important stage.

We often "run out" of creativity because we're limiting ourselves, especially content creators. If we are in the beauty niche for instance, we'd draw a line and not cross it.

How about borrowing ideas from the food niche? Their photography process perhaps. It could be anything really, just don't limit yourself.

2. Get Inspo

Another generic piece of advice but cliches are cliches for a reason.

If you're a fashion designer for instance, check out what the top dogs are doing. Check out what people more advanced are doing and see if you can recreate something similar with your own signature touch.

Bear in mind that Inspiration doesn't mean copying. If you produce the exact replica of someone's work, you're basically a counterfeit, not creative.

3. Break the rules

As seen on: My Instagram

If you feel like you're stuck in limbo, what better way to get out of it than to shake things up?

Break, the rules, do the unexpected. If nothing else, the process will help you keep an open mind and as we've agreed in point one, this is the first step in the process so, nothing to lose

4. Revisit old ideas

You remember how you had grand ideas that had to be chucked because try as you might, you knew you just couldn't pull it off?

Well, things have changed, you have changed. A lot of the content I produce these days are old ideas I had but couldn't execute, so go through old notebooks and see where it goes.

5. Set up a mood board

Get a couple of pictures that inspire you. Collage them and get your notepad ready because ideas would probably start to flow.

6. Improvise

I cant' stress this point enough.

There will always be limitations in life. If you can't overcome them the straight forward way, take an alternative root.

For example, I haven't come around to having backdrops yet. I had an idea of using a red backdrop to compliment my red and white shirt. Did I whine and complain about having no backdrops? No. I taped my red scarf to the wall and there you have it.

An important point to note is this: Done is better than perfect.

I can see the line that proves the backdrop is indeed fabric but if one chooses to focus on perfection, you'll never get anything done. Just put your stuff out there and learn to be better.

So, I'll leave you with this: Always see possibilities.
That's the key to creativity.

How do you get out of a creative rut?

  1. Amen to thinking outside the box! I think that's one thing I tend to overlook by sometimes caging myself within some boundaries. Thanks for this post. xx
